Understanding Fragrance Notes: Top, Middle and Base Notes

By The Fragrance Editorial Team
Fragrance is often described in layers known as notes. These notes help explain how a scent can change from the moment it is first applied through to the fragrance that remains later in the day.
Understanding top, middle and base notes can make it easier to explore different fragrances and identify the scent styles you enjoy most.
TOP NOTES — THE FIRST IMPRESSION
Top notes are the scents you are likely to notice first when a fragrance is applied. They create the opening impression and can introduce the overall character of the fragrance.
Fresh and lively ingredients are commonly associated with top notes. These can include citrus notes such as bergamot, lemon and grapefruit, as well as fresh herbs, light fruits and aromatic notes.
Because the opening of a fragrance can develop relatively quickly, it is worth allowing a scent some time before deciding how you feel about it.

MIDDLE NOTES — THE HEART OF THE FRAGRANCE
As the opening notes begin to soften, the middle notes — often called the heart notes — become more noticeable.
The heart helps shape the main personality of a fragrance and connects its fresher opening with the deeper notes that follow.
Floral notes such as rose, jasmine and orange blossom are often found at the heart of fragrances. Fruity, green, aromatic and spicy notes can also form part of this layer.

BASE NOTES — DEPTH AND CHARACTER
Base notes form the deeper foundation of a fragrance and become increasingly noticeable as the scent develops.
Common base-note styles include woods, amber, vanilla, musk and other warm or rich accords. These notes can add depth and help shape the fragrance's lasting character.
The combination of the base with the remaining heart notes is often responsible for the scent you experience later in the wear.

HOW THE NOTES WORK TOGETHER
Top, middle and base notes are not completely separate stages. They blend and overlap as a fragrance develops.
The opening may begin bright and fresh before becoming floral, woody, warm or sweet. This gradual development is one reason the same fragrance can seem different shortly after application compared with several hours later.
A well-balanced fragrance brings these different elements together to create a complete scent experience.

WHY FRAGRANCE CAN SMELL DIFFERENT ON YOUR SKIN
A fragrance may not smell exactly the same on everyone. How it develops can be influenced by factors such as skin, environment, temperature and the way the fragrance is applied.
For this reason, when possible, give a fragrance some time to develop rather than judging it only from its initial spray.
You may discover that the opening is not your favourite part, while the heart or base becomes exactly the scent you were looking for.
DISCOVERING THE NOTES YOU ENJOY
Learning which fragrance notes appeal to you can make choosing your next scent easier.
If you enjoy bright, refreshing fragrances, you may be drawn to citrus, fresh or aromatic notes. If you prefer softer styles, floral or musky fragrances may appeal to you. For something richer, you might explore fragrances featuring woods, amber, vanilla or spices.
There are no fixed rules. Your fragrance preferences are personal, and exploring different scent families is part of discovering what suits you.
